In Alberta, it is possible to learn French in the classroom through three different study programs: Francophone School, French Immersion Program, and French as a Second Language courses.
Parents have many questions about their child’s future :
- Does the Francophone school enable our child to learn English at a level that will allow them to succeed in life?
- Because they attend a Francophone school, will my child be able to speak and write English proficiently?
- If one of the parents at home doesn’t speak French, will they be able to help with homework?
- Why do some Francophone schools not allow English instruction before the 3rd grade?
- As immigrants to Canada, are we entitled to Francophone schools?
- If our child attends a Francophone school, will they be able to continue their post-secondary education in English?
This conversation will help you better understand the differences between the two systems and make the best decision for your child’s future.
