Language and culture transmission: Alberta parents mobilize in great numbers

Edmonton, May 7, 2026 — The Fédération des parents francophones de l’Alberta (FPFA) reports an extremely positive outcome for the very first Summit on Language, Culture, and Identity Transmission, held on May 2 at École Claudette-et-Denis-Tardif in Sherwood Park. This major event brought together over 240 participants from across the province, confirming the deep commitment of families toward the vitality of the French language in Alberta.

Under the theme of linguistic, identity, and cultural transmission, the Summit offered a unique space for renewal and training. From Yao’s opening keynote to the 21 specialized workshops, participants and professionals were able to exchange concrete strategies for raising children who are proud of their culture within a minority context.

« Seeing such a mobilization of Alberta parents sends a strong message. It demonstrates that the transmission of our language is not just a challenge, but a heartfelt priority for our families who wish to provide their children with the necessary tools to thrive in French. » states Geneviève Savard, President of the FPFA.

Sommet sur la transmission linguistique, culturelle et identitaire

The Summit was not limited to theoretical discussions. Participants left with practical resources and, above all, an increased sense of confidence in their roles as “cultural bridges.” The event also served to solidify ties between families and their community partners.

Discussions held during the Summit identified concrete paths for action:

  • The consolidation of the educational continuum which remains at the heart of language transmission and community vitality.
  • The need to continue providing tools and support to parents and professionals, whose roles are essential to children’s cultural awakening.
  • The transformation of linguistic insecurity into identity pride so that everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves in French.
  • The strength of an open and pluralistic Francophonie that reflects the diversity of today’s families and remains attentive to the needs of every generation.

The FPFA wishes to thank all organizing bodies, volunteers, facilitators, and financial partners who made this day possible. Resources presented during the Summit remain available at sommetab.fpfa.ab.ca
